![]() But he seemed to consciously play material not found on his prior tour. Much of the Pink Floyd material was drawn from the band’s golden period between 1973-1979, with the bulk of the songs coming from The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall. But then the screen lifted and Waters, still looking fit and spry as he nears 80, appeared, leading the band through crowd-pleasers, “The Happiest Days of Our Lives,” and the second and third parts of “Another Brick in the Wall.” At this point, the screen covered the stage and we could only hear Waters’ disembodied voice. Kicking off the concert with “Comfortably Numb,” Waters replaced the soaring version from The Wall with a quieter, more haunting rendition. But minor gripes aside, Waters and company put on one hell of a show. Also, some of the songs featured animated sections that felt out of place. ![]() During a beautiful rendition of “Us and Them,” for example, images of destruction and casualties in the Middle East undercut the song’s crescendos. ![]() During one section, the face of every American president from Reagan to Biden filled the screen, slapped with the brand of “WAR CRIMINAL” and evidence of the blood that stains their hands, such as Obama authorizing drone strikes.Įven for people (such as this reviewer) who embrace the same politics as Waters, the video sometimes threatened to upstage or distract from the show. Waters is throwing his support behind reproductive rights. A litany of slogans from “Fuck the Supreme Court” to “Fuck Your Guns” flashed overhead. But how did the show play a few nights before in Salt Lake City? Or when Waters reaches Texas in October?Īs Waters and his band played on a stage set in the center of the arena, a multimedia show took place on a giant screen that hovered overhead giving support to Black Lives Matter, trans rights, Native Americans and numerous other causes. But in a message before the show, Waters told fans to both shut off their cellphones and “If you’re one of those ‘I love Pink Floyd but I can’t stand Roger’s politics’ people… you might do well to fuck off to the bar right now.” In a progressive town like Portland, the crowd met this messaging with cheers. Sure, last time around you had Donald Trump’s head on a giant floating pig. But the musician, who recently turned 79, doubled down on the politics, turning the concert into a multimedia experience that could be both exhilarating and exasperating no matter your ideology. For fans who caught the musician’s Us + Them tour in 2017, there was only a little overlap as Waters seemed to purposely trot out the Floyd material that went overlooked last time as well as some surprises from his solo career. Waters played 24 songs over the course of two-and-a-half hours, with a large portion devoted to Pink Floyd material. If that student had attended Waters’ This Is Not a Drill tour, finally happening now after the COVID-19 pandemic stopped production two years ago, he would realize a decade later that his father was full of shit. ![]() That is a ridiculous reading of the Pink Floyd classic album. One of my wife’s middle-school students and his father had attended that concert, and the next day in class, the student told my wife that his father claimed Waters is a conservative. When Roger Waters brought his The Wall tour to Portland 10 years ago, the Moda Center was still called the Rose Garden.
